The pilgrimage church "Zum gegeisselten Heiland auf der Wies" stands in the hamlet of Wies, southeast of Steingaden, in Upper Bavaria's Pfaffenwinkel region. From Halblech-Buching it is a short drive – ideal for a half-day trip from your holiday apartment in the Allgäu.
The Wieskirche was built between 1745 and 1754 by Dominikus Zimmermann in the Rococo style. The ceiling frescoes were created by his brother Johann Baptist Zimmermann, court painter to the Bavarian electors. Architecture, stucco, painting and woodcarving merge so seamlessly that a "light structure of form and light" emerges. Since 1983 the Wieskirche has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is one of the world's best-known Rococo churches, drawing around one million visitors each year.
The church is open daily and free to visit. Opening hours vary by season: January/February 8 a.m.–5 p.m., March/April 8 a.m.–7 p.m., May to August 8 a.m.–8 p.m., September/October 8 a.m.–7 p.m., November/December 8 a.m.–5 p.m. Sightseeing is paused during services and the church's house rules apply. For guests of the Beim Dokterer holiday apartment, the Wieskirche is a rewarding stop on an Allgäu holiday and combines well with a drive along the Romantic Road.
