The municipality of Halblech, with the districts of Halblech, Buching and Trauchgau, lies on the edge of the Ammer Mountains, which at around 29,000 hectares form the largest nature reserve in Bavaria. The Ammergau Alps Nature Park was designated in 2017 and covers 227.38 km² with the greatest elevation range of any German nature park (approx. 800 to 2,185 m).

Around 200 km of hiking trails open up the region. Halblech is certified as a premium hiking location and is part of the Allgäuer Wandertrilogie.

Frequently asked questions about the region

Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau castles are open daily, closed 1 January and 24, 25 and 31 December. Summer hours 28 March to 15 October 9 am–6 pm; winter hours 16 October to 27 March 10 am–4 pm. Tickets are tied to fixed entry slots and must be booked in advance via the Ticketcenter Hohenschwangau.
By the Tegelbergbahn cable car from Schwangau (valley station Tegelbergstraße 33). The aerial tramway climbs around 892 metres to the mountain station at approx. 1,720 m.
Yes. The Buchenberg chairlift in Buching opens a family-friendly ski area at around 1,140 m with a main run of about 2 km, an illuminated toboggan run (around 2.5 km) and six groomed cross-country trails.
The Wieskirche near Steingaden is around 17 km from Halblech-Buching and can be visited free of charge daily (opening hours vary by season).
