Neuschwanstein Castle stands above the village of Hohenschwangau in the municipality of Schwangau, only a few kilometres from Halblech-Buching. That makes the world-famous royal castle one of the closest excursion destinations for guests of the Beim Dokterer holiday apartment.
The foundation stone of the Palas was laid on 5 September 1869. The castle was commissioned by King Ludwig II of Bavaria; the designs came from Munich stage painter Christian Jank, with architect Eduard Riedel leading construction, later succeeded by Georg von Dollmann and Julius Hofmann. Seven weeks after Ludwig II's death in 1886, the still-unfinished castle was opened to visitors. The interior wall paintings draw on motifs from Richard Wagner's operas and medieval German legend.
Neuschwanstein is open daily, closed only on 1 January and on 24, 25 and 31 December. From 28 March to 15 October the summer hours are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.; from 16 October to 27 March the winter hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Visits are only possible as part of a guided tour of around 30 minutes, and each ticket is tied to a fixed entry time. Tickets should be booked in advance via the Ticketcenter Hohenschwangau, located between the two castles. From your holiday apartment in the Allgäu the day can be planned in a relaxed way – ideal for an Allgäu holiday focused on the royal castles.
