Hohenschwangau Castle sits in the village of Hohenschwangau in the municipality of Schwangau, directly opposite Neuschwanstein. From your Beim Dokterer holiday apartment in Halblech-Buching, the castle is an easy drive away.
The site goes back to Burg Schwanstein, first documented in the 12th century. In 1832 the future Bavarian King Maximilian II acquired the ruin and had it rebuilt between 1833 and 1837 in the neo-Gothic style under the direction of architect and theatre painter Domenico Quaglio (1787–1837). The interior and exterior design and more than 90 wall paintings draw on themes from medieval legend and the history of the Schwangau region. The royal family used Hohenschwangau as a summer and hunting residence for decades; King Ludwig II spent much of his childhood here. Since 1923, the castle has belonged to the Wittelsbacher Ausgleichsfonds.
Tickets are sold exclusively through the Ticketcenter Hohenschwangau, situated between the two castles, with online booking available. If you are planning an Allgäu holiday with the royal castles, Hohenschwangau and Neuschwanstein combine well in a single day. Back at your holiday apartment in Halblech-Buching, you can let the impressions settle on a walk along the Halblech mountain river.
